The Mecklenburg Medical Alliance and Endowment (MMAE), was begun in 1934 as an organization for physicians’ spouses. Now, in addition to physicians’ spouses, we welcome Friends, with full membership benefits. Friends are any person who would like to share in supporting our mission–advocating for a healthier Charlotte-Mecklenburg community.

MMAE is an organization with a community impact as well as a center for friendships that can last a lifetime: at a membership meeting telling us about Pat’s Place, an agency healing abused children which we support;  serving as a hostess at Holiday House, our major fund raiser;  stuffing envelopes to send to prospective members; serving on the Program committee to set the calendar of membership programs; planning the logistics of our annual Community Health Luncheon to open a major health topic to the wider community; serving on the Grants and Disbursements committee to evaluate applications for awarding funds to programs.  There are many other volunteer opportunities- a place for everyone’s time and talent!

The heart of our organization is the awarding of funds to health related programs in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.  Annually, agencies are invited to apply to the MMAE Grants and Disbursements Committee for specific health related programs. The list of more than 60 projects MMAE has supported in the past 33 years points to our impact in caring for the elderly, the young, the homeless, the abused, Habitat houses, safety for children, defibrillators to literally give the gift of life, drug education, adolescent health.  Our Community Health Luncheons have educated attendees to learn about such areas as stopping the stigma of mental illness, the dangers of deep vein thrombosis, the importance of exercise to brain health, developing childhood empathy for adult health.

Membership meetings are wide ranging—educational and fun—a cooking class, home décor at a local shop, a fashion shows, learning about our grantees’ programs, a computer class to expand personal abilities.  Christmas will perhaps bring us a program for decorating our home or hearing how the White House is decorated for the holidays—maybe a cookie exchange—and then a collection of money or needed items to support a local agency in their holiday program such as A Child’s Place or McCreesh Place, or Toys for Tots.

Fund raising is an integral part of any non-profit’s survival and over the years, MMAE has conducted a variety of events to raise monies for our Endowment.  Holiday House, held every other year, is our major fund raiser.  Becoming an Alliance Angel upon joining is also a regular opportunity.  Other funds are raised periodically through a Holiday letter, requesting memorials and honoraria from our members; Doctor’s Day cards to honor a special physician.

Membership in MMAE is an annual, tax deductible fee of $50.  The member fee  underwrites the administrative costs of MMAE, insuring that all other funds that are raised are put to the support of our annual grants process.

Physicians’ spouses may also join the state and national Alliance organizations, as indicated on the membership application.

We invite you to join MMAE and become one of us. We are dedicated to making a difference in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community and would welcome your participation.
