MMAE’s Ongoing Programs Focused on Prevention of Violence and Abuse

As part of the effort to curb violence and be supportive of the AMA-Alliance National Organization’s Stop America’s Violence Everywhere (SAVE) initiative, the Alliance has provided continuing support of local shelters and efforts to aid abused women and children.

In 2003, a $55,000 donation from the Endowment enabled the Charlotte / Mecklenburg Police Department to purchase an ABI 310 Genetic Analyzer, equipment that identifies DNA and facilitates the analysis of rape kits.
Nancy Carter, Charlotte City Council member and Alliance member, gives MMAE member Joni MacDonald a plaque recognizing the MMAE's donation of an ABI 310 Genetic Analyzer.

In 2004, MMAE provided area hospitals with cameras, equipment, and computers for the documentation of forensic injuries. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Forensic Medicine Program, photographic documentation is invaluable in prosecuting cases of child abuse, domestic violence and assault.

In additional efforts to fight violence, MMAE has provided:

  • "Safe Shelter Cards" for women who are victims of domestic violence. The cards, which direct women to shelter, are placed in hospital emergency and rest rooms.
  • Conducted an Anti-Bullying Campaign
  • Distributed the AMA-Alliance Hands Are Not For Hitting brochures in area classrooms.
  • Sponsored Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, author of Stop Teaching Our Children To Kill, to speak about Violence in the Media.
